Milwaukee Brewers 2010 Draft Recap

June 17, 2010

The Brewers loaded up on college pitching this year, starting with second-rounder Jimmy Nelson. Nelson struggled a bit against lefties, giving up more than twice as many homers than he did against RHBs, despite striking out more LHBs. He has it in him to dominate: His March was eye-popping, striking out more than a batter per inning and getting nearly 80 percent of outs on the ground.

A very different SEC pick is Hunter Morris. This year, only two draftees were worth more than 40 runs above average with the bat. One was Kyle Parker; the other was Morris. Playing first base means he'll need to keep hitting, but at least he's a good first baseman, grading out at +2.4 runs in 2010 and +1.9 last year.

Much later in the draft, the Brewers selected Thomas Keeling of Oklahoma State. He's the virtual definition of a "flyer," striking out 92 in 64 innings but allowing baserunners like he's getting paid for it. 42 walks is bad enough, but 17 hit batsmen mean he was putting someone on base nearly once per inning. I don't think we need to look at a scouting report to know that this dude throws hard.
