Toronto Blue Jays 2010 Draft Recap
June 15, 2010
Toronto came into the draft with a renewed commitment to building from within, and started that process off by taking Georgia Tech RHP Deck McGuire 11th overall. He seemed to make sense there based on the scouting reports, and our numbers don't argue differently. Perhaps the most interesting thing about his splits this season is how truly uninteresting they are - consistent any way you slice his results.
At #41, the Blue Jays sent groans across the copy edit desks of sports sections across Canada with their pick of Asher Wojciechowski. Wojciechowski's walk rate dropped steadily through his college career, (5.5 in 2008, 4.5 in 2009, and 2.3 in 2010). Which, of course, means it should be almost zero by the time he reaches the major leagues. Ain't numbers fun!
With the 126th pick, Toronto selected University of South Carolina redshirt junior Sam Dyson. Selected last season by the A's in the 10th round, Dyson instead chose to return to his Gamecockian roots. Statistically speaking, it was a smart choice, as Dyson's numbers show both improved command and control, as well as an increased proclivity to make the ball be hit on the ground.
