Boston Red Sox 2010 Draft Recap

June 15, 2010

The Red Sox spent the first night of the draft hoarding top college talent. Both Kolbrin Vitek and Bryce Brentz have already received plenty of online attention.

And LSU's Anthony Ranaudo? How many column inches could possibly be spent this summer detailing the twists and turns of a negotiation between a) one of MLB's highest profile teams and b) baseball's highest profile agents, over c) a consensus pre-season Top 10 pick who d) is set to play in Peter Gammons' favorite summer wood bat league? A lot, maybe? As such, we'll dig deeper into a few of Boston's later round selections.

"Slot? We don't need no stinkin' slot!" So said the Red Sox when they selected University of Texas RHP Brandon Workman in the second round, a guy most commentators had pegged for the mid-first round until rumors of his unwillingness to sign for slot helped him slide to the second day of the draft.

Like a number of recent Red Sox college pitcher picks, Workman profiles as either a starter or a reliever going forward. He's worn both hats before, and has maintained a strikeout and groundout profile in both. He's a Top 15 draft-eligible college pitcher based on our run values of the last three seasons so at pick #57, Sox fans will just have to find something else to worry about.

There's not much more for us to say about Boston's seventh round selection, Miami LHP Chris Hernandez, that Jeff didn't already cover in his pre-draft THT piece. He's a guy whose results our metrics love. Scouts seem to be divided on his future projection, but college hitters simply could not figure the dude out. He struck out more than a batter per inning in each of his three seasons, and by inducing more double the number of groundouts as airouts in his career, Hernandez made certain that for the ones who could figure him out, they did so with only minimal impact.

At #773, TCU's Tyler Lockwood brings less than a strikeout per inning to the table. But he also brings twice as many groundouts as airouts, and when a guy induces more than two groundouts for every inning pitched, it's tough to complain too much.
