Philadelphia Phillies 2010 Draft Recap

June 18, 2010

The difficulties of evaluating mid-major prospects by the numbers aren't limited to the level of competition. For pitchers like Ball State's Perci Garner, the defense behind them raises questions. Against righties, Garner struck out 11 per nine, allowed only three homers in 44 IP, got tons of groundballs...and posted an ERA of 5.52. Yeah, split ERAs can be wonky, but his whole statistical profile looks like that. But that's only a concern of ours; all the Phillies should care about are those pretty peripherals.

The peripherals aren't so friendly to Cameron Rupp. He's an excellent defensive catcher, but his 21.1 percent strikeout rate is a flashing red warning sign. He also struggled with Friday night pitching, posting an OPS of only .749 against opposing aces.

In the later rounds, you gotta love senior left fielder Chris Duffy. Coming from Central Florida, he didn't face the toughest competition, but...443/538/851? The dude almost slugged 1.000 against righties. He had an off-month in April and OPS'd 1.135. Our stats page shows 30 splits, and he hit .400 in 24 of them. You couldn't ask for a better DH in A-ball.
