New York Mets 2010 Draft Recap

June 18, 2010

First-rounder Matt Harvey has all the numbers you want to see: tons of groundballs, few home runs, three times as many strikeouts as walks, a balanced platoon split. The downside is that he got there by throwing a lot of innings, and a lot of pitches. The Mets already have enough players on the disabled list, so they'll have to be very careful with this one.

The first position player the Mets chose, catcher Blake Forsythe, may well turn out to be a mistake. He grades out just fine (+2 this year) behind the plate and has shown some power, but the positives come with a strikeout rate of 22.3 percent. Given that 18 percent is a warning sign, Forsythe has some work to do.

But not as much work as Cory Vaughn. By our measurements, Vaughn's overall results are among the three worst of any college player taken in the first five rounds. Making matters worse, his strikeout rate this year was 25.2 percent. Maybe the Mets think they can teach plate discipline. If they can, they might've picked up two steals in the early rounds.
