Atlanta Braves 2010 Draft Recap

June 18, 2010

Todd Cunningham, the first college player popped by the Braves, has a solid all-around game. He's one of the few guys who rated above average both in defense and baserunning all of the last three years. His competition level raises questions about the bat, but there's no doubting his athleticism.

By contrast, Joey Terdoslavich is a bit of a draft-and-dream. We could pick on a lot of things, but let's focus on the baserunning. At 3.4 runs below average (remember, short college season!) he was about as bad as it gets. Below average base stealing, avoiding double plays, and reaching on errors. Only 16 D-1 players were worse on the bases, and those guys didn't exactly fly off the board last week.

It would be interesting to know what scouts have to say about Barrett Kleinknecht. He posted gaudy numbers, though it's tough to read much into those because he played in D-2. The 2:1 groundout/flyout ratio is attractive, but the 5.4 strikeouts per nine is not.
