Houston Astros 2010 Draft Recap

June 17, 2010

The ACC is not an easy place to hit. Few players know that better than Austin Wates--he did ok (315/431/484) against conference opponents, but went nuts on everybody else, to the tune of 470/569/760. Unfortunately, A-ball has more in common with the ACC than it does with the rest of D-1.

Bobby Doran's results are a bit of an enigma. He posted a solid 8.2 K/9 against 2.4 W/9, almost two grondouts for every flyout ... but suffered through an ERA of 4.57 and a .454 SLG against. He didn't give up too many homers, so are all those doubles home runs waiting to happen, or flyouts when he gets a better defense behind him?

Another enigma is the 2010 college catcher class behind Yasmani Grandal. Adding to the complexity is one-hit-wonder Ben Heath. He came out of nowhere to post a monster season. Let runs above average tell the story: 2.4 in 2008, -0.7 in 2009, and 31 in 2010. Basically, he went from hitting like Austin Wood to hitting like Austin Wates.
