San Francisco Giants 2010 Draft Recap
June 16, 2010
Stats versus scouts, stats versus scouts ... same song, different day. Gary Brown has all the tools you'd ever want--you look at him and see your 2014 leadoff hitter. If you look at the numbers, one thing pops out: 230 plate appearances, nine walks. Between now and the majors, his .438 batting average is going to go down. How much he succeeds as a leadoff hitter depends on how much he can compensate by improving his plate discipline.
An interesting contrast is the center fielder the Giants took with their next pick, Jarrett Parker. Parker is a defensive monster, amassing 15 runs above average in his career, better than all but one other collegiate (Brian Heere). He walks plenty, though he strikes out too much--19.3 percent this year, enough to constitute a red flag on an otherwise strong statistical resume.
Giants fans rejoice: We don't have any complaints against third-rounder Carter Jurica. He walks enough, he doesn't strike out too much, and he slugged better than .600 in the competitive Big 12. Plus, he's been solidly above average defensively at short. He may well be more likely than Brown or Parker to have prolonged success in the majors.
