New York Yankees 2010 Draft Recap

June 15, 2010

The Yankees selected Tulane third baseman Rob Segedin in the third round, their first college draftee of 2010. College mashers who can man an averagish-if-unspectactular hot corner often fall under the category of "safe" picks. The fact that Segedin's 2009 season was wiped out by a back injury would beg to differ, but really, without it there's probably no other way he makes it all the way to pick #112. His plate discipline certainly is no worse for the wear (33 walks to 20 strikeouts in 2010), but he does have a knack for giving value away on the basepaths (-2 runs below average in 2010, and -3 runs in 2008).

Two picks later, the World Champions took Tommy Kahnle, a New York native who opened scouts eyes with his performance (and velocity) in Cape Cod last summer. As part of Division II Lynn University's starting rotation, Kahnle walked batters at nearly 6 per 9 innings pitch. So, let's hope he can flourish in a relief role.

To try and assess the Yankees' 12th round pick, St. John's RHP Daniel Burawa, simply rinse, wash & repeat. New York native. Walked nearly 6 batters per 9 innings. Again, hopefully the Bombers can stick him in the bullpen and just let 'er rip.
