Minnesota Twins 2010 Draft Recap

June 14, 2010

The following sentence will shock you. The Twins drafted a strike-throwing pitcher. I know, hard to believe, huh? Organizational philosophy or no organizational philosphy, Alex Wimmers was a great college pitcher. His junior year K/9 of 10.7 was the lowest of his career. And, as our friend Bryan Smith pointed out in his must-read piece on Wimmers at FanGraphs, the addition of a changeup allowed the Twins' first pick to hold left-handed batters to the following slash line this past season: .110/.168/.120.

In the sixth round, Minnesota selected Kentucky LHP Logan Darnell. Here's Darnell's K/9 and BB/9 for the past three seasons:

2010: 6.7 | 3.4
2009: 9.7 | 4.1
2008: 6.4 | 7.4

Trust your scouts, we guess.

Sixty picks later, the Twins took Darnell's Kentucky teammate 1B/OF Lance Ray. Whatever he does in the majors, it seems to us he'll have to do with the bat, as his defense registered -10 (regressed!) runs below average according to our play-by-play metric.

Draft Class Breakdown

Here's a general idea of who they took, and where they got 'em. To compare to other teams and MLB averages, check out this post at THT Live.
