Detroit Tigers 2010 Draft Recap

June 14, 2010

We're not really sure if Chance Ruffin will be used as a starter or a reliever, and it seems Texas coach Augie Garrido wasn't either. Ruffin served both roles during his career with the Longhorns, putting up comparable numbers in either role.

At #68, the Tigers nabbed Arkansas' Drew Smyly, a selection pigeon-holed as a "performance" pick...and for good reason. Smyly fares well in our system, posting pitching runs above average of +40, +28, and +12 during his college career.

We've already written about our affinity for Bryan Holaday. He's a wizard behind the plate, so if the Tigers can convince him that walking is important, their 193rd pick could pay big dividends.

Outfielder Collin Kuhn was Detroit's 15th round pick. His 39 whiffs in 169 at-bats in 2009, was a huge warning sign. He's gotten better--43 strikeouts in 244 at-bats this season--but this still may not end well.
