LA Angels 2010 Draft Recap
June 11, 2010
Scouting Director Eddie Bane gets the reputation as the anti-Beane for a more toolsy approach to his picks, and he did squirrel away a bunch of high school guys with the Angels' first five picks.
At #81, he selected Florida Southern's Daniel Tillman, he of the K/9 of 13 and the groundout/flyout ratio percentage over 1.5. With a walk rate of 5.00 this season, he's definitely a live arm. And one to dream on.
At pick 144, the Angels went back to the Florida Southern well, shifting from the school's all-time saves leader to their best starter, lefty Max Russell. Another pitcher with a k rate over 10, and a groundout percentage over 1.5. see, don't you just love it when stats and scouts agree?
In the 35th round, LAAoA selected UNC Charlotte first baseman Ryan Rivers, a guy who rates out as one of the top 10 players selected after Round 30, according to our Runs Above Average. He's solid enough with the bat (+6 runs this year and +11 in 2009), but he more importantly brings a well-rounded game, also grading out above average in both the field and on the basepaths.
Tillman and Russell are part of a remarkable group. Twelve Angels draftees came from non-Division One four-year universities. We don't know if that's a record, but since only about 135 such players were chosen this year, and that's a big year, it certainly could be.
