The SEC Tournament is Up for Grabs

May 24, 2010

The bracket is out for the 2010 SEC conference tournament. It's a little more interesting to draft watchers than the Division Two World Series, so we thought we'd fire up our monte carlo simulator and see what it says about this week's action in Hoover.

The SEC didn't exactly play out according to expectations this year. The biggest surprise has been the tumble of the LSU Tigers, largely thanks to Anthony Ranaudo's injury making him all but a non-factor. LSU comes in as the eight seed.

But still, this is a stacked conference. Every team has at least a player or two who is high on MLB draft boards. According to our version of strength rating, the weakest team in the tournament (Ole Miss) is still better than about 250 Division One teams.

Here are each team's chances of winning the tournament:

  SCHOOL STRENGTH CHAMP
  Alabama 0.672 7.0%
  Arkansas 0.765 17.9%
  Auburn 0.746 16.6%
  Florida 0.740 15.0%
  Louisiana State 0.657 5.7%
  Mississippi 0.633 4.6%
  South Carolina 0.761 16.3%
  Vanderbilt 0.761 17.0%

Couldn't be much more up for grabs if you tried. Our ratings conflict a bit with the tournament seedings, but with five teams between .740 and .765, it's hardly a travesty. As always, there's a ton of talent in this league, and every game in the tourney has the potential to be a great one.
